Seeing narcissism in others allows us to ignore it in ourselves

“Americans might be narcissistic not by birth, but rather by birthright.”

Michael Sendrow wrote a powerful and compelling essay on clinical narcissism, within the context of American individualism.

To survive as a modern democracy, America must reckon with the compromises these ideals require. But our economic and governmental systems inherently enable deeply selfish people to prioritize the individual over the collective.

I’m still reeling from this week’s attack on the US Capitol, but Sendrow’s essay reminded me that this type of behavior is indicative of the value system underlying the American Dream.
